DECK’s Partners

One of the objectives of the Downtown Eastside Community Kitchen Project (DECK) is to form partnerships with community agencies and residences to facilitate community kitchens in the Downtown Eastside.

NESTERS MARKET

Nester Market is helping DECK purchase fresh and quality products at reasonable prices from its store in the Woodward’s Building at Hastings and Abbott. This relationship with Nesters Market is benefiting community kitchens located at Single Room Occupancy Hotels (SROs) in the Downtown Eastside.

I appreciate the relationship that we have built thus far in the community, and look forward to growing that in the future.    -Mike Paré, Manager, Nester Market

NEIGHBORHOOD HELPERS PROJECT

The Neighborhood Helpers Project coordinates coffee socials in SROs, and can alert DECK when there’s a group that may want to cook together. It provides an invaluable, trusted link to the heart of the community.

URBAN ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY KITCHEN GARDEN

DECK is a founding member of the other group: the Urban Aboriginal Community Kitchen Garden.  Part of the UBC Farm on Point Grey has been allotted to First Nations residents of the Downtown Eastside, who come to plant and tend a garden, eventually harvesting the fruits and vegetables they’ve grown, and often cooking them together. It’s a seed-to-table experience, and it offers a chance for residents to have a break from what can be a harsh neighborhood, to get out into the fresh air of a rural environment.
